Famous Men Who Died in Michigan

Harry Houdini died at Detroit’s Grace Hospital on Halloween in 1926.  Harry was 52 years old. He had been repeatedly struck in the abdomen by a university student, unexpectedly. Houdini could normally survive the event, but he hadn’t been given time to prepare himself.

Elijah J. McCoy was an African American who held more than 60 patents, mostly in engineering. The expression ‘The real McCoy’ means that something is the real thing, something is legitimate. This is attributed to locomotive engineers wanting McCoy’s parts, not inferior imitations. Elijah lived in Ypsilanti, MI for most of his life. He died in Eloise hospital in 1929, after suffering from serious injuries in a car accident seven years earlier.
