Helltown Ohio and Disappearance of the 9th Legion

Random Michigan and other mayhem.  You know you want it!

This show, “Michigan and other Mayhem”, is a sort of factual, slightly comical, always earnest podcast about interesting stuff in Michigan and around the world. It is done by two sisters-in-law (Ali and Jenn) that like to talk about random interesting stories.  Expect cults, mysteries, murder, fast-talking, and a couple of mental palate cleansers… and cuss words.  Those happen on this show, a lot.

Warning: This podcast occasionally contains strong language which may be unsuitable for children.

  • Alerts:
    • Pretend podcast music (because we couldn’t find any we liked enough for a theme song)
    • Ali has a weird laugh. It is often loud.
    • You can hear either Jenn’s dog or Ali’s dog whining in the background. Do not be alarmed.
  • Helltown has been brought to you by their sponsors: chemical spills, murderous Satanists, mutated animals, and serial killers
    • Helltown is in Summit County, Ohio
    • A completely abandoned town that includes…
    • The White Church
      • Decorated by upside down crosses (not always a good look)
      • Used by Satanists who are waiting to snatch up you and your innocent family
    • Chemical spill (the stuff of horror movies)
      • It created the Peninsula Python, a giant snake that likes the taste of people
      • Just one of many mutated animals
    • Insane killer
      • Murdered all the kids on a bus
      • Look into the bus and you can see the scene replaying itself
    • The name Helltown came from the neighboring residents
    • The real deal:
      • In 1974, the president gave power to the National Park Service so they can protect our land from deforestation
        • Not just in Ohio, (where Jenn was born) but across the country
      • The residents were forced to sell their property to the government
        • Some homeowners were supposed to be able to stay, without making any new changes to their homes.
        • Like anything, some residents with power or connections were able to keep their homes, while others had to give theirs up. No surprise there.
        • There were people who built their homes and lived there for generations before being forced out by the government.
        • Everyone had 90 days to leave, homes and businesses
          • Even though the land was confiscated in 1979, there has been demolition going on as late as 2016
          • They had time to move… the Park Service people were being jerks. Let’s face it.
        • Frontline has an episode that aired in 1983 called “For the Good of All” regarding this issue
        • Frontline Documentary – For the Good of All
      • Jenn has a personal connection to this issue. When she was a kid, due to airport expansion, her family was forced to go either give up their home or have them move it to another plot of land of the airport’s choosing.  And that is how the Kings moved from Ohio to Michigan.
  • The disappearance of the 9th legion brought to you by their sponsors: incomplete historical records and centuries of time
    • Roman armies 9th Legion conquers Britain from south to north
      • Controls the continent for 74 years, then disappears from Britain’s historical records
    • In 1954, Rosemary Sutcliff writes a novel called “The Eagle of the 9th” which renews interest in the mystery of the disappearance of the 9th Legion
      • The fictional story of Marcus Aquila who travels north of Haiden’s wall to find out what happened to his father, who was part of the ninth
      • Marcus is looking for Legion’s battle standard, the bronze eagle
    • Haiden’s wall
      • The boundary between the Roman conquered land and the northern territory of Britain. They must have run out of butt-kicking fuel because they parked it there for ¾ of a century.
      • Pict (ancient Scots) lived above the line (Haiden’s wall)
      • Significant portions of the wall still standing.
        • Declared a World Heritage Site in 2016
      • Make no mistake, it is not the border between England and Scotland. It is a common misconception.
    • Theories on their disappearance:
      • The 9th Legion tried to go past the wall and were slaughtered by the Picts.
        • Most popular version, maybe because of the book by Sutcliff
        • Roman emperor Hadrian admitted could not keep control of Britons
        • He had sent the 6th Legion as an emergency backup to the island so it could also be true
      • They were transferred out of the area
        • Possibly defeated by the Parthians, in Iran
        • Possibly defeated by a Jewish uprising in 132 AD
        • Maybe they went to the Netherlands
      • The movie Centurion is recommended by Ali
        • Michael Fassbender is the main character and the story is a loose adaptation of the story of the 9th being killed by Picts.
      • Jenn and Ali’s hypothesis: whoever wasn’t killed in the 9th, was absorbed into the northern community.
